If Wal-Mart doesn’t fit into their life style and would hurt existing businesses the city officials should be able to do something to prevent Wal-Mart from destroying its city. These same cities could be the ones where factories had to close in part to Wal-Mart’s demands for lower priced supplies. Wal-Mart has been shown to be the death of many mom-and-pop shops. In many instances where once was a thriving family owned business, now stands a Wal-Mart that offers their same goods at a fraction of the price. These business owners are forced to shut down their business and either leave their community or face financial ruin. Although Wal-Mart does offer low priced goods they do nothing in the way of offering consumers a higher standard of living. If Communities that have no real place for its citizens to earn a decent wage are usually abandoned and left a ghost town. What was once a thriving community is nothing but a shadow of its former glory. While a majority of Americans see Wal-Mart as a place to get things at a cheap price others know that they don’t offer their employees a decent wage and don’t support American companies. I think that Americans shouldn’t shop at Wal-Mart because they are not helping the American economy and are supporting foreign suppliers over American suppliers. Wal-Mart executives only look at their own bottom line when it comes to making business deals they don’t look at the consequences of their actions to mainly buy supplies from foreign companies has on the American companies. Many factories and mom-and-pop shops had to close down thanks to Wal-Mart entering the market. Wal-Mart itself had started out as a mom-and-pop shop so you would think it would be more community oriented. A lot of those mom-and-pop shops are the backbone of the community and once they close down the community isn’t as it once was. Wal-Mart needs to think not only of its bottom line but of the businesses and communities that their need to grow and get the lowest price effect. They need to think of its stakeholders not just its shareholders. These stakeholders are the factory workers who are left without a job, the communities that relied on the factory workers to spend money to help their local economy, the families of the factory workers who are now unemployed, and even American consumers. While Wal-Mart is offering American consumers cheap goods, the American economy is suffering from the loss of American jobs. There needs to be a way for Wal-Mart to still make a health profit and reach their goals without hurting other small businesses and American suppliers.
