Violins are the most popular and the most well known instrument in the strings orchestra. This often leads to some people thinking of every strings instrument in terms of the violin. For example, a cello is a “big violin.” Lots of strings players who don't play the violin are often enraged by comments like these, but how close are cellos to violins? Cellos are actually very similar to violins, as their alias suggests, but violins and cellos are also very different.
Violins, for starters, are quite small, and cover high registers of notes. Violins are played standing and are held on the player’s shoulder with the aid of a shoulder rest and a chin rest.
