The media is supposed to report breaking news stories that affect the community in a whole. It is supposed to present the reader with information based research and while allowing the reader to be able to form their own opinions on the story that has been reported. However, the media outlets has the ability to shape and frame the way we, as a society view a certain topic such as a vegan diet on children. Veganism is defined by the Vegan Society is defined “A philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, …show more content…

The media of course escalates this issue by mainly publishing stories about when a child on a vegan diet gets harmed. The Huffington Post and National post both posted articles in July of that there are written by Mohammed Omar and Mary Hui, respectively, about this issue. The Huffington Post mentioned that this case was the fourth one that had happened in the span of 18 months in Italy. Huffington post being a fairly liberal newspaper , surprisingly glossed over the amount of cases that had happened in the past. However, the more conservative newspaper National post went in depth of the similar cases that had happened. The author of this article covered all bases when it came to proving that veganism does not lead to malnourishment in children because she detailed the most recent cases. In this case, the two newspapers seemed to switch their positions because as mentioned above, Huffington post glossed over the number of cases that had occurred. Since it is considered as more of a liberal Newspaper, it is surprising when all the information is not given to us to make an educated decision on the case. While compared to the National Post article, the author provided the reader with as much information about the case as possible such as contacting different experts on veganism and also referencing different articles and/or studies that had been previously done on the case. Generally speaking, the media coverage on this story is distorted as both newspapers mentioned above shown different sides of the story that differentiated from their political

The only sentence in the essay that comes close to a counter argument is “All of your daily nutrients can be found in plant-based sources,” (Garretson). This lack of counterargument could have been why Garretson implies the switch to veganism while never saying the word vegan. Throughout the essay she makes references to the negatives of not only meat but dairy and eggs too. One example is the quote found on the previous paragraph about alzheimer’s disease being linked to not only meat, but dairy and eggs too. If she were truly trying to argue vegetarianism, there would be no need to include the link to dairy and eggs too.…

In January, 2000 Laura Fraser wrote the article “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian” for Salon magazine. Fraser is an author published in several national magazines including The New York Times, Vogue, and O: the Oprah magazine. Attempting to reach an audience of either new or long term vegetarians/vegans, Fraser discusses her journey of changing her vegetarian lifestyle of 15 years to quitting entirely. She happened to write this article in the beginning of the year while most are advancing their new year's resolutions. Perhaps she was trying to convince newly vegetarians or vegans not to continue with their resolutions, or maybe it was all just a coincidence of timing.…

The author uses his tone and respect for others beliefs to gain the trust and respect of the audience. We did not see anything except for the lack of factual evidence that the author needed to change. We only found a few problems in the source overall. The author was writing about the negative impact that a strict vegan diet can have on a person’s health, but he also included the reasons that a person becomes a vegan, which really were not that relevant to the main claim. The author also uses a lot of opinionated statements instead of providing more factual evidence and statistics.…

Eating animals has been a regular meal for humans for many centuries, but it has also been opposed by veganists for many years. Although consuming animals has been opposed by vegan aficionados, it has also been a source of controversy because of how factory farming produces the meat we eat in our daily meals. In the book “Eating Animals” we get the sense that the author will be arguing and encouraging veganism, but instead he argues about how the meat we consume is produced. The author Jonathan Safran Foer’s main claim in the book is about boycotting animal factory farming and encouraging traditional husbandry because factory farm animals are stuffed with antibiotics, mutilated, tightly confined, and deprived of stimulation. While traditional…
