The Act implemented two major changes to the US’s immigration policy, in addition to increasing border security, the act also provided amnesty to illegal immigrants and prosecution to those who knowingly hire them. This policy is surrounded by much controversy in both its stated course of action and in its execution. Overall I disagree with the Immigration Reform and Control Act. The provision that allows for illegal immigrants to attain permanent residence, is unjust and will inevitably invite further illegal immigration. Granting permanent residence to those who immigrate illegally, shows the US’s inability to enforce their immigration policies. This will adversely increase the demand to come illegally if there is even the slightest chance that amnesty will be granted. Yet while the prosecution of those who hire illegal immigrants may help negate the issue, its stipulations render it nearly useless.
