Argumentative Essay On Twitter

The success of a website relies heavily on the various methods used to grab the user’s attention. As a member of the online community I would only visit a website periodically if it captures my attention. One website in particular that I feel accomplishes this is Twitter. If you aren’t familiar with it, I consider it a social virtual world, because it’s a computer-simulated environment supporting simultaneous communication with members of the website represented by avatars (Holmstrom & Jakobsson, 2001; Jakobsson, 2006).

Twitter is a platform that can be accessed on your computer or mobile device. The members of Twitter can share news, their thoughts, jokes, comments, and information in 140 characters of text or less (Smith, 2012). It’s

There are some ads that occasionally appear, but you have the option of dismissing the ad and removing that specific ad from your feed. In my case, I mostly only follow people that I know and my favorite artists. Therefore, the content that appears on my feed is relevant to my life. It contains comments of what my friends are thinking, which I like because it helps me see how relatable certain thoughts could be or even how opposed. It gives me an insight to the online character that my friends portray, something that I feel could affect the face-to-face interaction between my friends and I. For example, if I see that they are behaving in a racist or even sexist manner online I would probably not want to continue being friends with that person, because it shows you their morals and values. In addition, one thing that might be my favorite aspect of Twitter is that I can speak my mind. I’m the type of person who has thoughts constantly flowing in my mind. I’m too lethargic to grab a notebook and pencil each time I think of something relevant to my life, so I just open my phone and tweet it instead. During a developer event in San Francisco on October 2015 Twitter’s CEO, Dorsey said, “Twitter stands for freedom of expression, and will not rest until that is recognized as a fundamental human right.” This allows the platform to be more engaged with complex geopolitical …show more content…
You can send them a direct message, reply to a tweet, or simply like/re-tweet (re-post) their tweets. It makes interacting with other users a breeze. According to an article that I recently read, hashtags are an effective method to discover substance related to precise topics, as well as the people generating a buzz in regards to those topics (Murtagh, 2013). I agree with this statement because the hashtags (#) help keep related tweets together if you click on the hashtag. Hashtag’s are also used so that twitter can calculate what topics are trending in your area. This is a fine feature that keeps the Twitter community together and informed. Hashtags also gives Twitter the opportunity to apply itself in other virtual worlds. Virtual worlds like Facebook and Instagram also have incorporated hashtags into their websites. Twitter also allows you to connect (link) your tweets to other virtual worlds. For example if you connect it to your Facebook anything you tweet will be shared to your Facebook instantaneously. This feature allows companies and members like myself to save time on having to work on our presence on social media (Duron,

Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Disconnects” talks about how online connections may make people feel closer to each other yet pull them further apart because of things people do like multitasking. She further talks about this disorientation and feeling “alone and together” when interacting with people online, because she is talking to them and seeing them without them actually being there. Turkle gives an example of her friend, Ellen, who talks to her grandmother over skype and feels guilty because she feels as if connecting with her grandmother was “another task among multitasking”. This results in false intimacy and fake relationships. The question of whether social media and online connections have positive or negative outcomes…

Since the beginning of time, achieving success has always been a group effort. Whether it be building the Pyramids or the White House, nothing over the course of history has ever been completed by one person alone. There is always help, whether it be in the form of someone acting on another individual's behalf or supporting someone by sharing advice or lending an encouraging word. Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is a work that reveals the tendency of people to fail at helping and supporting unique or unordinary individuals find a way to fit into a materialistic society that seemingly contradicts everything they stand for. It is through analyzing the reasons why Chris McCandless goes into the wild that we see the importance of having a support group and finding people to hold yourself accountable to.…

In “Do I Really Have to Join Twitter?” by Farhad Manjoo discusses the development of Twitter since the beginning of its release. Twitter is a seemingly excellent way to share your life moments with the entire; however, according to the author, the idea of Twitter is actually an “overhyped, media sensation” (Farhad 164). With the social media that is the current trend such as Skype, Facebook and texting it would seem to be that Twitter isn’t as much a necessity, as the several thousand may believe. Bringing Americas Closer Than Ever with Social Media There is a lot of controversy today about social media and the effects on politics, but are we as voters actually getting more knowledge about our political leaders through social media? In an article by Nicholas Carr titled “How Social Media Is Ruining Politics” he clearly states how he believes that social media is having a negative effect on how we view our leaders and others around us. Carr states “We may discover that the gates maintained by our new gatekeepers are narrower than ever,” but are they really (Carr)? Social media is a new advance in technology that is constantly growing around the world and Americans are using it to the full extent to get all the information they could…

Heidi Schlumpf makes it clear in her essay, “Slacktivism” Makes the World a Better Place from the Couch, that social media does have the opportunity to create improvements that last through the interactions of its users. She argues that slacktivism doesn’t provide immediate change, yet it is a great way for people to get involved in a particular cause. After exposure to a topic, it creates interactions and sharing among users that has the power to overcome topics our society faces because of social media’s reachability, ability to unite, and accessibility. One of social media's greatest assets is that social media can reach many in a short amount of time. A post can be viewed by at least a 100 hundred people that a user personally knows.…

Their goal for this book is to not waste readers’ time and cut to the chase by focusing on only the important things readers need to know about social media. There are three key points in this book. The first one is that social media does not just gain friends and followers, but gains detractors. The second one is the social media does not just form communities, but forms brand power.…

How the Hashtag Changed Social Media The concept of the hashtag was created over nine years ago and is currently used to organize social media posts by idea and content.
