They didn’t have the money for that. So why do I classify her as an ‘Chinese’ parent? The ‘Chinese’ parent is usually a new immigrant to the country, with little to no money to speak off, they look to their children to grow up and make six figure salaries in a ‘good’ career, so they push them not with money but with their powerful words, and the experience of growing up as the child of immigrants; translating for their parents when they went to restaurants, having to help pay the bills, assisting them in navigating an adult world.
And that is exactly what Jacobsen’s mother did, she pushed him with her authoritative words, at one point in his article Jacobsen writes that his mother said, “Good men go to college.” That’s all she said on the matter.
