Every parent-no matter where in the world they are, worry that they aren’t doing a good job and that their children will grow up into bums who’ll smooch off of them until the day they day. But there are some parents out there who instead of drowning their doubts in coffee and parenting manuals, turn their doubts into a fuel for a authoritative style of parenting that the west has dubbed, “Tiger parenting.”
These parents are determined to prove they wrong by molding their children into little geniuses who excel at everything academic or music related. Their children begin reading at the ripe age of 3 and by the time their 8 the little tiger cubs have been enrolled in everything from high school level math classes to the summer music program at Julliard. They didn’t have the money for that. So why do I classify her as an ‘Chinese’ parent? The ‘Chinese’ parent is usually a new immigrant to the country, with little to no money to speak off, they look to their children to grow up and make six figure salaries in a ‘good’ career, so they push them not with money but with their powerful words, and the experience of growing up as the child of immigrants; translating for their parents when they went to restaurants, having to help pay the bills, assisting them in navigating an adult world.
And that is exactly what Jacobsen’s mother did, she pushed him with her authoritative words, at one point in his article Jacobsen writes that his mother said, “Good men go to college.” That’s all she said on the matter. His mother treated him like an adult and burdened him with all the expectations that an adult carries, thus giving him what no special program or college course could do for him: maturity. With that maturity in hand Jacobsen defied all the odds and statistics and fulfilled his mothers
