For example, Rosa Parks inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 by refusing to sit in the “colour” section; Martin Luther King Jr. led several movements that advanced civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience; and Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, used his popular artistic platform to criticize the challenges African Americans are facing today in the United States. These leaders have advocated for human rights through different means, either by forms of activism or by using popular culture. Popular culture, or pop culture, has the power of influencing people’s attitudes towards a specific topic since it characterizes the dominant belief of a society at a given point in time.

Childish Gambino newest song “This is America” caught a lot of people’s attention because of his obvious criticism of human rights in the United States and how a certain group of citizens is unfairly treated. While the artist tries to bring awareness to this societal issue, the song itself is not impactful enough as the lyrics are sort of hard to comprehend and are repetitive. However, this cultural artefact becomes extremely powerful and meaningful once you pair it with the video. The visual component is what makes

In this scene, the singer is holding both of his arms stretch out as if he was holding a gun. By this point, the video has shown several shootings, cars on fire, popular dance moves, and other references to American society; therefore, with this scene with no sound people can make their own assumptions about guns and human rights, it is like a small few seconds to take everything in and continue with the narrative. I remember being nine years of age and watching all kinds of TV shows. I didn’t quite understand them all, but I sat there and watched them because they entertained my older brother and parents. I specifically remember watching the show South Park. “Oh how dumb,” I would say to my self and I could not understand how adults could find these mean animated characters so funny. At some point it even bothered me and I did not find the show funny but rather insulting.…

Do Americans have it too easy? I think that a lot of the countries think that Americans have it super easy compared to them. "America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Abraham Lincoln. Sometime, I believe the existence of life is just a tragedy. It is not what happening to my life or to those around me that effecting me deeply – it is the external forces that I have no control over or the inability for me to make a different to the situation. Every day, I see bad things happen in the world, especially the thing that happen to the innocent children and the unborn babies. Granted, not all babies are cute or healthy when they were born, but nonetheless, they are innocents. Why do they have suffered at the hand of the adults: the one that created them, the one that meant to take care of them, the one that support to sacrifice for them?…

And there’s a big impact on that socioeconomic status where there’s this role of husband and wife. It’s a real-life problem in today’s society. The husband is going out being unloyal and the wife knows that but because of society, the wife is supposed to forgive the husband for his indecent acts even if it hurts her. I think the artists want to show that this is a recurring problem in today’s society and he has done it quite well with the lyrics and the video showing pathos, ethos, and…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

A studio lamp suddenly falls out of the sky in front of his house. A homeless man resembling his late father (Brian Delate), who supposedly drowned in a boating accident when Truman was a child, tries to make contact but is forcibly removed from the 'set'. Truman's car radio picks up the communications traffic between the 'backstage' people. Despite the attempts of his friends and family to convince him that he is just imagining things, Truman decides that he wants to follow his secret yearning for traveling to Fiji. However, he finds his efforts to leave Seahaven blocked at every turn by mysterious mechanical difficulties, natural disasters, and sudden traffic jams, all placed in his way by the mysterious God-like producer of the show, a man appropriately named Christof (Ed Harris of "Apollo 13").If you can suspend the disbelief of millions of viewers being able to sustain interest in a television show that covers every single moment of Truman's life (no matter how boring it gets), and the ability of Christof to keep him in the dark for so long, then you will find yourself enchanted by this wondrous Capra-esque fantasy.…

What is America? It seems like such a simple question, but when you really take a step back and think about it, America can be classified in many different ways. The most commonly held ideal about this country is it’s strong sense as a land of freedom and equal opportunity for all. However, when the topic of immigration comes up, it is often given a negative connotation and seen as a damaging process. Hungry for Change Why is it that law mandates public school meals have a minimum calorie intake, but not a maximum? This owes itself to the fact that when nutrition standards were established for public schools, it was to solve the problem of undernourishment. The majority of school aged children used to walk to school, played more outside, and were more active in sports. This resulted in children burning more calories than school meals provided.…

A Government and it’s Nation How much should a nation rely on its government? The debate about who should receive help from the U.S government has been raging on for years. There are already several types of government programs currently set in place that provide “handouts” to those in need of help. Opposers of many of these programs claim that people take advantage of them, become lazy and rely on their government too heavily, or certain individuals are put out because they do are considered a minority, but are more qualified for the job. Regardless of people’s issues with programs like social welfare, minority set asides, affirmative action, and promotional practices, when taking everything into account, they can still be used to further growth in the nation -if they are used correctly.…

“Education is the foundation upon which we build our entire future” Christine Gregoire, a respected politician, governor, and lawyer perfectly stated the importance of education and school. Without education, children's futures would crumble. Therefore, in what world would we allow kids to fail their classes and then be rewarded when we know how important their education is. The “No Pass, No Play” rule a highly debated topic in the student-athlete community ensures not only that students work hard in school but also solidifies their futures and teaches responsibility. The “No Pass, No Play” rule originating at UIL in Texas, states that students must pass all classes (C and above) in order to participate in extracurricular school activities,…
