As more and more people around the world are shining their lights with pride and expressing themselves more freely, it brings about the political debate regarding the use of restrooms by the transgender community. This sensitive topic addresses many concerns for both the transgender and the religious communities. The most important concern at the moment is our educational system, as a large group of children and adolescents could be greatly affected by the discussions put in place by the state and federal government. All things must be considered as the decision could lead to legal disaster. As Americans, we all deserve the same rights. Not because we were born this way or that way, because we are Americans. This battle has gone on since biblical times. In the Leviticus 20:13, simply states that homosexuals should be killed. There for interpretations of the bible do not offer realistic options in today’s world. A 1989 report issued by the U.S. Health and Human Services showed that 1/3 of teen suicides that year were attributed to gay and lesbian youth. The year 1993 was a big year for the LGBT community. A report was published with information regarding testimony of youth in public hearings about gay and lesbian. The first national study for sexual harassment to include being called lesbian or gay, which is considered homophobic harassment. Title IX afforded federal protection to guard against sexual harassment to include homophobic harassment. Scientists have found that genes and prenatal hormones have an effect on homosexuality. The link is a gene or mutation on a chromosome which has an effect on DNA. This can cause what they call androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) sometimes referred to as intersex condition. Take for example, a vibrant and beautiful girl walking the beach, she is stunning and turns heads often. She has the chromosomes of a male (XY) but a body and brain with of a female. She has a normal vulva but the vagina is not as deep and there are no ovaries present.
