As more and more people around the world are shining their lights with pride and expressing themselves more freely, it brings about the political debate regarding the use of restrooms by the transgender community. This sensitive topic addresses many concerns for both the transgender and the religious communities. The most important concern at the moment is our educational system, as a large group of children and adolescents could be greatly affected by the discussions put in place by the state and federal government. This battle has gone on since biblical times. In the Leviticus 20:13, simply states that homosexuals should be killed. There for interpretations of the bible do not offer realistic options in today’s world. A 1989 report issued by the U.S. Health and Human Services showed that 1/3 of teen suicides that year were attributed to gay and lesbian youth. The year 1993 was a big year for the LGBT community. A report was published with information regarding testimony of youth in public hearings about gay and lesbian. The first national study for sexual harassment to include being called lesbian or gay, which is considered homophobic harassment. Title IX afforded federal protection to guard against sexual harassment to include homophobic harassment.
