Argumentative Essay On The Space Race

Superior Essays
Humans have pondered on the question, “Are we alone?” for centuries, however, humankind still lacks an answer. Human beings are cognizant and curious of the world surrounding them. So much so that governments, including the United States government, spend billions of dollars on space programs to explore the solar system, the planet Mars in particular. As our earth develops into a planetary, polluted waste, Mars could eventually become our new home. Scientists believe Mars sustained or could sustain life, yet, they still can't uncover what lies beyond our planet. Perhaps Earthly humans aren't the only intellectual organisms that inhabit the universe. Most Christians believe that God made human beings in His likeness and placed them on …show more content…
In the 1950s, during a time of nuclear potential war, the Red Scare, and the Korean War, another factor between the United States’ and the Soviet Union’s rivalry was the Space Race. The Space Race was a strength and power competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, an artificial satellite, which would orbit the earth in 1957 (History.com Staff np). Undoubtedly, the United States launched a counter rocket as a response to the Soviet Union’s display of power. The name of the rocket was Explorer I under Dwight Eisenhower’s presidency (History.com Staff np). Eisenhower also established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). And thus began the United States’ love of …show more content…
Mars, albeit a prospering planet, is still not up to par with Earth. Life may have existed on Mars once upon a time, or Mars is in the process of providing for life sustainability. A major reason scientists believe life existed on Mars is the presence of water. However, there is absolutely no proof of intelligent life on any planet. The solar system in which we live in only holds one planet that has the ability to support life, intelligent included, and that is Earth. Mars neighbors Earth, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it has the same characteristics as Earth. Perhaps intelligent, extraterrestrial life exists beyond our solar system, even beyond our

From 1946, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) had been experimenting with rocket planes such as the supersonic Bell X-1.[12] In the early 1950s, there was challenge to launch an artificial satellite for the International Geophysical Year (1957–58). An effort for this was the American Project Vanguard. After the Soviet launch of the world's first artificial satellite (Sputnik 1) on October 4, 1957, the attention of the United States turned toward its own fledgling space efforts. The US Congress, alarmed by the perceived threat to national security and technological leadership (known as the "Sputnik crisis"), urged immediate and swift action; President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his advisers counseled more deliberate measures.…

At the same time, NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) came together by one Dwight Eisenhower. Also, another satellite was launched, led by the United States Air Force, was used to exploit the military potential of space. Both these satellites came after NASA was established, and worked alongside with NASA. The Soviet Union furthermore was able to be the first to send a probe to land on the surface of the Moon. This probe that accomplished this was entitled Luna 2.…

In preparation for the destruction of Earth, humans are to be transported to continue life on the planet Mars. Scientists have been studying this planet for decades. Research and experimentation have shown Mars is capable of supporting human life forms and other organisms. However, the time and money necessary to accomplish such a feat would be astronomical. Matt Williams, the Guide to Space Curator for Universe Today, expresses his opinions on this phenomena in his article, “How Can We Live on Mars?”…

When the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, the American public began to question Eisenhower’s presidency. They believed he was not assertive enough with Soviet Union relations. This sparked the political turn to space. To keep his presidential ratings up, Eisenhower created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), and the Space Race so America could reinsert itself into a place of military and space superiority.…

In Wiles last paragraph where she discussed mars she said “Robotic missions have found evidence of water, but if life exists beyond Earth still remains a mystery.” NASA has found water from their Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter but the International treaty that was signed back in 1967 will not allow the robot to investigate the site. NASA thinks the rover flight from Earth to Mars might have pick up some dirt, dust, or other microbes that would not make the liquid water anywhere near sterile. That means the only way humans can investigate it is if humans themselves travel to Mars and collect it themselves. This new information only makes scientist more eager to finding a way to get to Mars.…

Three small rocks that NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover examined on site identified to be the organic compounds that includes complex compound so-called PAHs. Nasa announced that this evidence may show the existence of primitive life in Mars. Ashwin Vasavada, project scientist for the Mars Science Lab (Curiosity), NASA Jet Propulsion Lab, commented that the mankind and Martian can be a close relative like “just a cousin”.…

Additionally, I believe the same things about Earth, and it is difficult for me to imagine that Earth will ever show redeeming qualities that will allow us to contact other lifeforms in the universe without starting a war. These misconceptions are mostly from taking history classes, and learning about the conflicts that each nation gets into when trying to expand or gain better economic wealth. However, these misconceptions might help me, in that they “prepare for the worst” in case of conflict with…

They discovered new lands and crossed new oceans. If they weren’t allowed to go on the voyage, then our history would be too recent. Humans would still be exploring and naming lands in later centuries, if such an event were to happen.…
