On the first day of school, students are thrown into the world of the arts. All students are encouraged to choose an elective to find themselves, and who they are. During the time of an elective, a student usually finds something they are interested in. If a student takes a photography class, then that student might have found a passion for life. The photography class would also give them skills for future events in their life, for example making greeting cards or taking pictures for the local news station. Because of budget cuts, these electives are dropping out of the school system. Academic values have changed drastically over the past few years. For one, the No Child Left Behind Act established in 2002 changed academic views around the country. This act states that, “...states are required to test students in reading and math in grades 3–8 and once in high school. All students are expected to meet or exceed state standards in reading and math…” (ESEA). Electives are so crucial in a students education. ¨Studies show how increased access to arts education can lead to better grades and higher rates of graduation and college enrollment¨ (Miller). If schools take out electives, students would not even want to be at school. “The elective courses are what keep the students in school…”
