Why Bad Things Happen To Good People
When something bad happens to someone, most tend think about what they did wrong to have been punished. However, that may not even be the case. Bad events can happen for many reasons such as, to test one’s strength, faith, character, and courage. All of which can be lost in a hard times that may feel as if the whole world is against you. In Stephen Crane’s short story “The Open Boat,” there were 7 men on the ship, but only 4 survived and were in the dingy, these men were barely on their death beds from being out at sea for so long without drinking water, without food, with the sun beating down and the only thing around for hundreds of miles is the harsh, unforgiving sea. The odds were against them and that death was the most likely outcome. In such dire time everything thing they do is a test of their every fiber, which causes a rippling effect for everyone else around them, it affects everyone. A man named Charles de Gaulle once said, “Faced with crisis, the man of character falls back on himself. He imposes his own stamp of action, takes responsibility for it, makes it his own.” From this quote, you can tell Charles is talking about how one can change their character when facing something they are not ready for, and that when it is over and done that he should own up to his actions. Sometimes people try to fit in by acting like everyone else, not being who they really are, so when they are dealing with a crisis they can not keep up the act and are who they really are instead of everyone else around them.
