The Death Penalty When thinking about justice, one might believe that if someone commits a crime, they should be held accountable. However, is the death penalty the right way to achieve this? I believe that the use of the death penalty should be discontinued, and from the lessons taught about this topic in class, my view has solidified. What the justice system is doing is morally wrong, as it is simply murder ordered by a government. It also goes against God’s teachings as He is the only one who has the right to choose whether someone lives or dies. The death penalty should be abolished since it is proven to be fruitless. Rather than viewing court cases as victim verses criminal, the law system should care about the well-being of both parties. This is called the “both-and approach”, and it alludes to a type of decision-making which allows for more outcomes of a case. Instead of picking sides, the court systems should care about the good of the victim and the offender as they are both human beings. The death penalty disregards the well-being of the perpetrator, forgetting that they too are a human who have the right to life, although with altered conditions. Many countries have stopped using the death penalty, and though it may be thought that the crime rate in these countries would increase, it did not. The whole process leading up to the murder is very costly in legal and processing, and there are other options on how to handle the people who commit violent crimes. If the justice system only used the sentence of life in prison, it would save tax payers money, continue to keep criminals away from society, and prevent the killing of the wrongly accused and convicted.
