“The Crucible” Essay Imagine if your spouse accuses you of being green. There are a lot of innocent citizens that are being accused of being associated with communism. In addition to the communist and the socialist both wanted the same thing. They both wanted the government to be in control and own all the companies and properties. They both also wanted to end capitalism, but other people wanted complete freedom. Encyclopaedia Britannica states, “In 1919, the United States Department of Justice began to arrest and send members of these groups” (Britannica). They wanted different things. One group wanted the government to control everything and a different group wanted freedom. So, eventually they started arresting people and taking them back to the countries that they came from. The government has a strong hold on things, so during the 1940’s and 50’s they decided to take action. Alan Brinkley states, “Forty-four out of the 48 state governments in the United States passed laws between 1949 and 1955 to suppress communist activities” (Brinkley). Throughout the years of the 1940’s and 50’s the majority of the state government's passed laws to suppress communist activities. There have been many who have been accused of being a communist, or a socialist, or even an anarchist. They were put in jail and once in jail, they were taken back to the originating land of said actuation. The nickname of the accusation was Red Scare and the Red Army. There are multiple rumors throughout the stories of McCarthyism. The articles tie to “The Crucible” because McCarthyism has to do with the play. Elizabeth lies about her husband’s affair with Abigail to save him. Abigail states “I have a sense of heat, John, and yours has drawn me to my window, and I have seen you looking up, burning in your loneliness. Do you tell me you’ve never looked up at my window?” (I, i, 563-567). Abigail is trying to get John to leave Elizabeth and get with her. She tells him that she stands in her window waiting for him and watching him and watching him in his loneliness. She says to him don’t you ever look up at my window thinking he misses her as much as she misses him. Abigail misses John and wants him back. She wants him to leave his wife for her, but he won’t, so she tries to get him to cheat on her again. She tells him how much she misses him, and turns arounds and asks him don’t you miss me as much as I miss you John and tries to get in his head. Later on, Elizabeth lies to the court saying that John has never had an affair to save him without knows that John confessed to it. All she wanted to do was help and save him. Goody Proctor states, “No sir” (III,i,1240). Goody Proctor told Hale that he has never had an affair with anyone and that he was a faithful husband. Good Proctor was trying to save their name and save her husband from jail so she lied to the court and told them that John has never had an affair. She didn’t know that John confessed to the
