The Crucible was written in 1953. Is based on the Salem witch trials in the early 1600s . during this time there was big hysteria of witches . Delusional girls made unsubstantiated claims about the existence of witches in Salem. Townspeople are not willing to stand up to the court for fear of being accused of being a witch , because those who were accused of being witches lives were and lead to hostility to rise in Salem . Those who were incriminated were expected to confess and also were expected to accuse others of witchery . . Many of the accused reparations were annihilated or received the death penalty , though most of the people accused were wrongly accused . During the time period ‘The Crucible” was written , which is the 1950s , the paranoia that was out was red scare , which is the fear of communism spreading. The media were not willing to stand up to Senator McCarthy for fear of being accused of being a Communist and townspeople are not willing to stand up to the court for fear of being accused of being a witch.Those who were accused were assumed guilty, put on trial, and expected to divulge the names of other Communist sympathizers , and also in “The Crucible” , the assumed guilty was put on trial were expected to confess and accuse others of being witches.
