James said something offensive to a group of children and they didn’t like it very much. They confronted him in the bathroom and tried to make him take it back, and instead of taking it back, he jumped out of the window and killed himself. Holden admires it because, he would rather die than take it back. James threw himself out of the window, and Holden respected him for that. This is valuable to human experience because, many people go through this everyday and have nobody to turn to. Some of the most important things to remember about this story is how Holden reacted when he lost his brother, Allie, and when he thought he was going to lose his sister, Phoebe. We should remember this because, the way Holden deals with these things is how one shouldn’t act. Holden went a little over the top when Phoebe got mad at him for getting kicked out of another school. She repeated “Daddy’s going to kill you.” (190) over and over to Holden.
