Likewise, these digital advancements allowed teachers to interact with students on “e-learning days.” A Roman Catholic school in West Virginia takes this advantage and turns snow days into cyber-learning days. The make-up days at the end of the school year were decreased, and students were able to learn everything they missed on the tablets. The tablets can be used as a communication across the nation as well. Teachers in Maywood Elementary, a school in California, are using tablets to help students open up to the English language. Recently, they arranged a virtual field trip to another elementary school. The students in this second school read to the students in California, providing a memorable classroom experience. Other schools around the world are using iPads and tablets to contact other schools and explore additional ways of learning. It is evident that tablets have more educational content. They offer apps, educational gaming, video viewing, animation, note-taking ability, highlighting tool, extended information, and built in assessment tools. These features are not available in a textbook. To illustrate, if a student comes across a word they do not know, they are able to click on the word to hear/ read the meaning of it on a tablet. On a textbook, other means would have been used; whether it is a book dictionary or in the glossary. The information in a tablet is much more accessible that information in a textbook. Furthermore, different users can customize their own preferences when using tablets. One student could set their font size as 14, while another has a front size of 20. Adapting to the students using tablets is no doubt a way for students to learn more efficiently and effectively.
