Tattoos, a permanent work of art on the human skin in the form of a design or wording, done by injection of ink and needle, are acquired for numerous reasons and have a variety of consequences. Although those with tattoos are not perceived in a positive manner, tattooing has become the sixth fastest growing retail business in the world (Singh). Tattoos also add fuel to the ongoing gender differentiation controversy because women with these permanent markings are severely looked down upon whereas men are thought to seem more masculine. Although tattoos are obtained for self-satisfaction, the recipient’s morals are typically mistaken for hostile rebels. Tattoos are obtained for a variety of reasons depending on the recipient. Some may get them for attention, self-expression, artistic freedom, rebellion, or as a visual display of a personal narrative, while others may get them as a reminder of cultural traditions, sexual motivation, addiction, or even due to drunken impulsiveness (Karim). Studies have shown that after receiving tattoos, both men and women experience an increase in body appreciation and self-esteem along with a decrease in anxiety (Karim).
