Twelve million. That is the number of people currently affected by the crisis in Syria. Yet, Americans all over the country, republicans in particular, are turning their cheeks to this ongoing disaster. The main question present in the media and politics today is—Should America let the Syrian refugees in? But I think the real question to be asking is, “Why not let the Syrian refugees in?” America is supposed to be the pinnacle of freedom. America is supposed to be the “melting pot” of the world. So, why are Americans even questioning the very roots from which they came? Most Americans claim that all of these people are Muslims and that they are ISIS in disguise. However, there are still Americans who associate Muslims with terrorism. The only factor that could be affecting this assumption is racism. When an Arabic person in involved in a shooting it is automatically called terrorism. But if a white person commits a mass shooting, the first thing that comes to people’s minds is, “He must be mentally ill.” Does it not come to anyone’s mind that maybe these terrorists could be mentally ill? More importantly, the Islam religion in no way promotes terrorism. According to the Islamic view, “The world is divided into two parts, the sphere of Islam and the sphere of war. It is called the sphere of war because jihad (“holy wars”) are to be fought in the non-Islamic world so as to convert the pagans…” (Islam 140). For Americans to assume that all Muslims are terrorist, would be to assume all Christians are connected to the Westboro Baptist Church or were connected to the KKK. The Quran states specifically, “Neither slay anyone whom God hath forbidden you to slay, unless for a just cause. Whosoever shall be slain wrongfully to his heir have we given power” (Sura 17, 35). So for people to assume that ISIS is actually an Islamic group would be a result of ignorance and misinformation. ISIS is no more Islamic, than the Nazi senior staff was Christian. Since the start of the Syrian civil war, over 300,000 people have died. Over 7 million civilians have been forced to flee their homes. This is equivalent to the entire Boston metropolitan being emptied out. The Syrian civil war began over pro-democracy protest erupting after the arrest and torture of some teenagers who painted revolutionary slogans on a school wall. Imagine the United States going into a civil war after protesters murder some prejudiced cops. Yet, there are still innocent American citizens involved who want no part in the controversy. That is the exact position of the refugees. These refugees are victims of terrorism just as much as the 9/11 sufferers. Just recently, the picture of a drowned Syrian boy has surfaced and captured the media’s attention. Once the media actually showed the side of the refugees, people started to realize that ignoring the situation is completely wrong. But even after this story came about, people still don’t want to help them at all. Nothing captures the hearts of people like children do. This was one child and only a few people realized the austerity of the situation. How many more children does the media have to show lying face down in the sand, drowned before they recognize the lives at stake here? How many more people have to die fleeing the exact thing we accuse them of taking part in? Over 12.2
