Student debt is an epidemic that has taken over the nation, and students are unaware of its ramifications. Schools know that students are willing to pay the high costs for a quality education, however, students do not always know how to pay for their schools. A part of this problem is that students are unaware that there are options other than student loans, there is a way to minimize their impact, and students believe many myths about scholarships that discourage them from seeking them out. Students need to be aware of their options to minimize the impact of student loan debts and should inform others who struggle to pay for their higher education. There are students who are unaware that student loans can be detrimental to their current and future financial state. An article written by Ginger Hervey in USA Today about Mark Kantrowitz’s tips to “minimize student debt” tells us that it is not too late and provides insight into a solution to the issue. A very significant tip that Hervey explains is that “there are even more people besides the government and your college that are dying to give money to eager students who seek them out.” The article also lists websites where students may find these third parties and list other tips like using old books and maintaining a budget while in school. Although most my tuition is paid with grants and scholarships given to me by the school, what I pay out of pocket was still too much and so I accepted a student loan thinking that it would be easier. On the contrary, a friend of mine, Vanessa, who attends another university, has per tuition paid in full through various scholarships she found herself.
