Scientists consider stem cell research and stem cell therapy as having a positive impact on treating different forms of cancer. While embryonic stem cell research is extremely controversial, stem cells used in cancer treatment such as leukemia are different. Unlike embryonic stem cells that use an embryo for regeneration of healthy cells, the cells used in leukemia treatment are called hematopoietic stem cells. The use of stem cell therapy has increased the survival rate of leukemia patients under the age of 50 or 70 therefore this form of therapy should be considered an option for cancer patients and new hope in modern treatment (“Acute Myeloid Leukemia”).

The used treatment for leukemia is chemotherapy. The amounts of chemotherapy that can be given to a patient are limited by the extreme side effects that it can cause. Although a higher doses would kill more cancer cells, its not possible since you loose a lot of white blood cells, and the bone marrow gets damaged. Doctors sometimes can use a stem cell transplant to give a higher dose of chemotherapy. The blood-forming stem cells used for a transplant can come from the blood or from the bone marrow.
Why will this be a better treatment that in the past?
This is a better treatment than in the past because chemotherapy has a lot side affects. These are the side effects of chemotherapy Anemia, appetite changes, bleeding problems, constipation diarrhea, fatigue, hair loss, and infections. Stem cell therapy has many less disadvantages than chemotherapy. Stem cell therapy can cure leukemia in a more “natural” way then chemotherapy. The risk is a lot lower then chemotherapy this is because the cell belongs to the body.
