Stem cells show the potential to be able to heal many types of injuries and degenerative diseases. Though stem cell therapies are questionable in their effectiveness, New York Yankees pitcher Bartolo Colon opted to have a treatment done in the Dominican Republic after having persistent arm troubles that prevented him from completing a single full season from 2005 to 2012, and even forced him to sit out for the full season in 2010. Steve Sternberg, a regular correspondent of USA Today, reported on the case study. According to Sternberg, Colon made a miraculous comeback after the treatment, not only completing his first season in seven years, but also pitching his first shutout in five years in his first season back. According to some scientists, like Joseph Purita, who gave Colon the treatment, Colon's case shows an obvious benefit of stem cell therapies.

CNN’s Saundra Young reported on a recent study in the field in which scientists took eighteen patients who were nearly blind due to various degenerative diseases and treated them using stem cell therapies. The scientists kept track of the patients’ progress for three years, and they found that the results were very positive. None of the eighteen patients showed signs of rejecting the foreign stem cells. On average, the eighteen patients vision increased by three lines on vision acuity testing charts. Those in the experimental group did not have any vision changes. It is a possibility that Bartolo Colon’s arm healed because of the power of positive thinking, but positive thinking cannot be a factor in the vision increase of three lines for the nearly blind patients with degenerative diseases. Thus, scientists can conclude that there must be some benefit of stem cell therapies even though they still have not officially proved
