Nicholas Carr Social Media Analysis

I neither agree nor disagree with the statements and opinions of Nicholas Carr. Social media is a very, very nasty place; there is no denying the negative attitudes and cruel comments of many users, as I have experienced firsthand myself. There is also excessive amounts of pressure - for females especially - to look a certain way, thanks to Instagram models who profit off of curves in all the right places and flawless skin. Despite this, all of the positive aspects of social media platforms surely outweigh the latter. It allows for self-expression in virtually whatever way you please, communication with people across the world, and access to literally anything you want to see at any point in time. Therefore, the debate as to whether or not …show more content…
This subject is very important to me due to having being personally affected by these seemingly perfect girls, so I will be brutally honest. They all seem to follow the same guidelines: tan, glowing skin, thin, toned bodies lacking off proportions, microbladed eyebrows and eyelash extensions, no acne, long blonde hair, and last but not least, an aesthetically pleasing feed featuring beach shots in bikinis taken by their boyfriends - who are, the majority of the time, also models. To make a living, all they have to do is hop on a plane to an exotic destination and look pretty while doing so. Alas, you can see why an impressionable young girl such as myself would be slightly hurt by this, wondering “Why do I not look like that?” They all insist their looks come purely from spending countless hours in the gym, but we all know it comes from 400 calories or less and genetics, thus leaving us hopeless and unhappy with ourselves. Everyone has considered doing a full 180, changing who they are and who they have been, and renewing themselves completely. I myself would consider myself a fairly different person on social media than in real life, because if I can be whoever I want on social media, then why not? Of course, an overabundance of personal information can be harmful. I can vouch for the idea of growing to dislike someone over time after finding out more and more about them and seeing their true colors.
In conclusion, I believe that social media is a blessing overall. You have instant gratification for anything you want to see, hear, or learn about. Music, TV shows and movies, politics, and constant communication with others are pretty concrete foundations of who we are as a society, and social media gives us access to all of that in multiple forms. Although it has its negatives, everyone has gotten something positive out of it at one point and it can only grow and improve over

This causes the woman who aren’t “perfect” to feel as though they are unwanted. People believe everything that they hear, “People believe that the media is the main culprit in people developing anorexia and bulimia (Tartakovsky, Margarita, MS).” More and more people are starting to believe this because since woman use social media more, it is more prone to them to feel that they need to look like ‘that famous instagramer’ to be able to feel comfortable in their own skin.
