The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stated that 10.2% of women ages 15-44 in 2009 were reported pregnant in the U.S. Approximately 15.5% of adults in the U.S. smoke cigarettes. Of the 10.2% of women that were pregnant, 12-20% were smoking while pregnant and putting their lives and their babies lives in danger. This is concerning because smoking while pregnant comes with a lot of complications. Smoking while pregnant has many effects on the women’s body and the child’s. In 1964 they finally decided it would be beneficial to put a warning label on cigarettes letting people know smoking while pregnant comes with risks. Women who smoke while pregnant have a greater chance of damaging their placenta than women who do not. In the article, “Smoke Gets in Your Placenta”, Dore Hollander addresses that, “Women who had smoked while pregnant (33% of the sample) had a greater likelihood than non-smokers of experiencing placental abruption and placenta previa.” Smoking while pregnant brings bigger risks to damaging the placenta shown in this Canadian study where a little under half of the women were reported to have issues with their placenta. Also, there are disorders the smoker could develop in their placenta, “Smoking during pregnancy has different effects on two placental disorders and uterine bleeding of unknown origin, according to a canadian study based on 87,184 pregnancies between 1986 and 1993”(Hollander). When women are smoking while pregnant their placenta could abrupt causing premature separation of the placenta. They could also have placenta previa, in which the placenta is next to the opening of the cervix causing complications with giving birth.
