December 6, 2013, Karl Pierson, an 18 year old student at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, legally purchased and obtained a 12- gauge shotgun. December 13, 2013, Karl Pierson then used that shotgun to kill one student, injure another, and then kill himself. The domestic attack lasted only a minute and a half, but I can tell you from a personal perspective, the students and families will continue feel its effect forever. A lot of controversy came after the shooting on ways the school could have stopped the shooter, and teachers having guns in their classrooms was one of them. As you know school shootings occur frequently, we see it on the news and social media very often. They happen most commonly in America that we hear of, but are a huge issue all over the world. The question is; How effective will teachers having guns really be? Teachers having guns will not put a stop to school shootings, and will in fact, have a negative impact on the students in the classroom, creating a more dangerous environment for learning. …show more content…
According to Justin Carissimo in his article “There have been 45 school shootings in the US this year,” he informs the reader that, “There have been 142 school shootings in the US since the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, a near average of one a week[...].” This was an article written in 2015 about school shootings that happened in the three years after the Sandy Hook Shooting. I do not think we realize how common this issue really is. We certainly ignore the fact that this is such a relevant issue because, most of the time, the victims are our age or younger. Nobody expects to be the victim of a school shooting and certainly no one expects 5 and 6 year olds to be the victims, like in the Sandy Hook
