While reading a really good story, we can become so invested in the lives of the characters that the outcome might impact us greatly. We want our favourite characters to have a happy ending and for the villains to get what they deserve. This refers to the idea of poetic justice. When poetic justice is served within literature, it is extremely satisfying to a reader. It is safe to say that in the novels Tale of Despereaux, The Ruins of Gorlan and Harry Potter poetic justice is quite evident.
At the start, Despereaux is looked down upon for his strange behaviour that does not align with the rest of the mice community. As a punishment, he is exiled to the basement where lies a fate unbeknownst to him. Similarly, on the day of Choosing when he

Yet it cannot be denied that they all do receive poetic justice in the end. Certainly, the form and extent to which they receive this poetic justice varies from novel to novel. In Tale of Despereaux, the fact that Despereaux survives is a miracle of its’ own. Even though Despereaux does not end up marrying Princess Pea, they become the best of friends. Furthermore, soup is no longer considered illegal which is of utmost importance to some of the characters in this story. On top of that, Miggery Sow is reunited with her father who out of guilt for abandoning her treats her like a princess thereafter. Lastly, although Roscuro attempted to kill Princess Pea, she sees that it is out of his own bitterness and misery. Roscuro’s own unfulfilled desires led him to an evil path. The Princess Pea, who is known to have an extremely kind heart, forgives Roscuro and grants him freedom as well. Hence, it is safe to say that poetic justice is achieved for the characters in this novel. In similar fashion, in Ruins of Gorlan, Will is ultimately considered a hero by everyone after his defeat of the Kalkara and even has the opportunity to choose to go to Battleschool if he still wishes. On top of that, Horace’s bullies are punished and Horace is no longer susceptible to being kicked out for slacking. Moreover, Jenny, Alyss and George are happy with their apprenticeships and the villagers and the kingdom are safe so far as well.. Through Halt, Will even finds out what his father really was and how him and Will’s mother had died. By imagining his father was a knight, Will was able to carry this false sense of a connection to his family while growing up without them being there. Now that he learns the reality of his father, this false idea he carried is changed because he finally has some real answers. In addition, him choosing to continue on as Halt’s

He did this by using variety of different persuasive writing tools. Stevenson used three of the many persuasive tools; these tools were pathos, ethos, and logos. These were his secret to convincing the readers to be on his side of the argument. In "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men" by Thomas Scarseth, the professor argues that "Of Mice and Men" is a tragedy, in which it is simple, yet complicated as it provides wonderful examples of realism and problems in the world, despite being a short read. Scarseth provides many claims and examples supporting the thesis of his paper, which will be highlighted in this essay. The claims are: every story doesn't have to have a happy ending, objectionable elements are necessary as they make stories more realistic, and not everything someone wishes for comes true. Scarseth's first point states that every story doesn't have to have a happy ending. Scarseth made this claim by stating in his paper, "...literature is not always only mere sugar candy; it can sometimes be a strong medicine: sour perhaps- at least to the untrained taste- but necessary for continued health.…

The choice between justice and injustice is always a difficult decision to make, especially during the time of war and when the decision challenges one’s moral belief. In the 1950’s, the US declared war against North Vietnam. The war itself was hard to be classified as either justified or unjustified. But if this struggle between justice and injustice comes to an individual, how would the individual make his own choice? This question is discussed in the short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’Brien.…

As many writers do, both Nathaniel Hawthorne and Laura Esquivel utilize a biased speaker in order to manipulate the reader’s interpretation of certain characters. In her novel, Like Water for Chocolate, Esquivel’s narrator shows a sympathetic bias towards Tita, and leads the reader to condemn Mama Elena, the force which acts upon Tita. Similarly, the speaker in Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter evokes sympathy in the reader for Hester, and establishes within the reader a sense of dislike for the Puritan officials. The bias of these narrators causes the novels to be alike in that the reader finds him or herself anticipating the downfall of the antagonizing force and the rise of the main character, who until the turning point is the subordinated force in the novel.…

According to poet Rita Dove, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” This quote helps us understand why poems come in so many different styles, forms, and subjects. If one thinks of poetry as a whole, perhaps the first poem that surfaces the mind would be a poem in lyrical verse. This more general form of poetry is indeed how the vast majority of poems are written. However, the more classic form of poetry, or perhaps the more ancient form of poetry, is found in epic form, which is known as narrative verse.…
