Environmental sustainability is when a person, community, or area has the ability to support the present and not negotiate the necessities for the future. Although there are credible arguments to support each side of the debate, it is appropriate for the government to enact one-child legislation in order to control the population.
If the world continues at the present population growth rate, then the resource for the future will be limited to the point of no return. Right now the population is using enough resources for 1.5 earths. By 2025, the estimated population is 8 to 10 billion people. That is 4 earths. Where are we going to find 4 earths? In 2007 huge riots broke out in the southwestern Guangxi Autonomous Region of China regarding the law. Few people were killed, but of the ones killed most were enforcers of the law. Still, law enforcements continue to implement the one child law.
We as a nation are using too many nonrenewable resources, and eventually we will run out. It takes three times as many resources to heat and cool down a large house with nine people living inside, compared to heating and cooling a small house for three. If parents were forced to only have one child it would be easier for them to make enough money from their jobs to support their only child. Some families do not make enough money to support their children because they have too many, so this law will help families world wide to allow their child to live a exceptional life.
However, it is hard to monitor how many children a family has. Parents can hide children, and lie about their existence. Also, what are people going to do if they have an accidental child after they have already had one.
