Here are the reasons why… Older adult’s experience physical changes, there are age-related disorders that impact the cognitive ability to drive, and the fatality rate involving older adult drivers has increased. All the reasons stated above impact the ability of an older person to drive safely. I believe the Archenbaum’s public vs. private would support my argument of being in favor of states restricting older drivers. The first reason why I am in favor of this restriction is because as we age our body experience changes at different stages of our lives. One Age-related health concern that can affect older drivers is a decline in vision functionality. According, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults are more likely to experience vision impairments due to having age-related eye diseases. Macular Degeneration is an age-related eye disease that damages sharp and central vision (www.cdc.gov). In California, to operate a vehicle, a central vision of 20/40 in both eyes with or without glasses is needed in recognition of road signs, hazards, and traffic flows (www.dmv.ca.gov). Public vs. Private value can be applied to my position because it can be very difficult make an older adult choose public transportation over use of their personal vehicle. For some older adults, using public transportation forces them to let go and face the reality that they can drive their own vehicle any more.
