Nuclear War Julius Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, was quoted saying “Now I have become Death, destroyer of worlds.” This was his response after witnessing the first atomic bomb being detonated. Nuclear war is a serious threat to our way of life. The criteria for something to be a serious threat to our way of life are the likelihood, the consequences, and the lack of preparation. Nuclear war is a serious threat because of its likelihood. Nuclear war has a high possibility of happening. The invention of the atomic bomb completely changed and some say revolutionized war and death tolls. One “nuke” has the potential to do much more damage than a conventional bomb. Nuclear weapons have been attached to missiles. And with the push of a button can be shot off to anywhere in the world. Not only do they work as traditional bombs they also release radiation. This radiation is absorbed into the ground after detonation. Then the radiated soil is propelled into the air. This is called fallout. There have been many instances where fallout has happened after a nuclear explosion and has had adverse effects not only on people but the environment. If contact is with humans burns and radiation poisoning occurs. The fallout can be lifted up into the Jetstream and carried off many of miles away from the explosion. It can then be deposited into the ecosystem for animals and plants to absorb, which further spreads the radiation. Anyone who survives the initial slaughter that will happen if a nuclear war would start, would have to deal with what is left. Large craters would be left wherever a nuclear weapon made impact. Areas around the crater would be uninhabitable for years upon years. Radiation would plague the area. Animal and plant life would mutate or die. The radiation would make helping victims very hard. Another consequence would be the tension between countries that had fired nuclear weapons against each other. Not much can be done or has been done to prepare for a nuclear war. Yes, bunkers have been build, but they are few and far between. They are not readily and easily accessible to everyone. If a nuclear war were to happen there are no guidelines to follow. There are no set things to do by the government. One may say that if we eliminate all nuclear weapons, then the threat of nuclear war is nonexistent. This is a valid point, except that countries have been hiding and secretly keeping the number of nuclear weapons they have for years and still are.
