The Importance Of Male Privilege In Education

Improved Essays
I am a college student in 2018. I’ve heard the words “Male Privilege” more than a few times. I’ve heard numerous arguments for its existence as well. I’m not convinced. Believe me, I am sympathetic to the problems women face in this country and on campus. There is a conversation to be had about the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses as well as other issues unique to women of which men will not have to face in their lives. However, to point to those issues and declare unequivocally that men, as a class, are privileged is ignorant of the realities that men face and the advantages that women possess. Not only that, “Male privilege” is an idea based mostly on statistically incorrect or misinterpreted issues. Most prominent is the …show more content…
Young girls are receiving a massive wave of support to succeed, get good grades, graduate and enter new fields. They are being pushed to become engineers, doctors, chemists…but when was the last time someone made a national effort to tell a young boy to get out there and make the world his own. I don’t see it happening, personally or statistically. Young girls are outperforming young boys in all levels of education: elementary, middle and high school. They are being held back less, being suspended less and outnumber boys in enrollment in a number of AP subjects. They are even being placed into gifted and talented education programs at a greater rate than young boys. All of this comes straight from the US Department of Education. I don’t and would never have a problem with encouraging young girls to succeed, but to ignore young boys in the process is unacceptable. I didn’t know any of these facts until I researched them and I suspect not many people would. It is not an issue we pay attention to or direct our efforts on. It is …show more content…
As I stated, women are dominating all levels of education and, even in the workforce, women are on a sharp upswing. Over the past 65 years, women have gone from 18.4 million in the workforce in 1950 to 73.5 million in 2015 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the other hand, male participation in the labor force has decreased from 1990 at 75% to 2017 at 68% according to the International Labour Organization. Women are not suffering in the way that the left would suggest. I would never argue that they haven’t faced problems and inequalities in the past, but to say that they are institutionally disadvantaged compared to men or that men are privileged or part of a “Patriarchy” is logically and statistically inaccurate. There are plenty of problems women face and I hope to confront and evaluate those in a future article, but nothing I’ve seen can prove the existence of “Male Privilege”

The concept of “Male Privilege” is just part of a larger mindset the left has, a dangerous mindset. The world can be easily viewed as this against that, men against women, whites against blacks…but in the end, that only leads to someone being ignored. When “Male Privilege” is believed in and prioritized, men can suffer and be left behind. We can see it in our young boys, our higher education, our prisons…Women have been on a thriving trend over the past decades, but with the concept of “Male

Kathryn Moeller’s 2016 article “Whiteness in an era of Trump: Where Do Go From here?” inquires upon the arisen political situation in America and it’s peoples views. She acknowledges the well-intentioned white americans who have become outraged and ashamed by how much support Trump has received during this election, in which she states he has displayed, a blatantly racist attitude towards coloured communities. It is due to this attitude, that the white working and middle class Americans are feeling uncomfortable as they 've grown accustomed to seeing politicians speak about racist ideas in a more lightly fashion. Privilege, Power, and Difference was written by Allan G. Johnson. He examines the issues of privilege, power, and difference within society, as well as the problems related to gender and race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability status, and social class (Johnson, vii). As someone who is a white, straight, abled man, he is privileged. The world we live in is considered a “man’s world,” in that power is a characteristic often associated with men, which is placed in their hands early on in life (Johnson 95). It is a heterosexual world, a white, nondisabled one.…

Think about a world where you could be denied opportunities at school based on your gender. What if you were not allowed to take certain classes or participate in sports because you were a girl? This world, believe it or not, was not long ago. Before Title IX, nothing stopped men from saying if women could or could not do something. It was legal for colleges to not admit someone because of their gender.…

Over the past couple of weeks we have been on the topic of privilege, which is something that has been around for hundreds of years. From whites and blacks to even men and women there has been always some sort of privilege in some form. One of the readings that was interesting was “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”. It has been twenty years since Peggy McIntoch wrote this article, and every thing that she has written is still relevant today. Right away in the beginning of her article she talks about how women don’t have the same privilege’s as men.…

Growing up, I never felt segregated based on my gender. I was always treated the same and given the same options as the boys were. It wasn’t until later in high school and college where I started noticing gender differences within society. The “glass ceiling” was clearly evident in the business world, but I’m not fully exposed to that, being that I’m still in school. The history of gender inequality, on the other hand, was something I was completely unfamiliar with.…

In Peggy McIntosh’s paper “White Privilege and Male Privilege”, Macintosh expresses that white privilege is unearned dominance that whites posses unknowingly, which gives them an advantage in society. She argues that by reviewing the denials surrounding white privilege, acknowledging white privilege’s existence, and the factors that protect these unearned advantages and dominance, we can then use these same unearned privileges to weaken the invisible privilege systems (McIntosh). Whites are taught in a careful manner not to recognize white privilege, further denying it even exists. Whites are taught that racism is something that puts others at disadvantage, but the more important part we are not taught about, is that it put others in advantage.…

Barry Deutsch’s “The Male Privilege Checklist” was composed as an imitation a similar list-style essay written by Peggy McIntosh. Her piece, titled “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack”, illustrates the unrecognized racial advantage white individuals have in society. Deutsch in turn constructs a numbered checklist to showcase the invisible privileges that men receive from people. What exactly makes the article memorable and outstanding? Is it the elegant use of syntax combined with powerful diction that makes the writing “flow?”…
