Love Over Hate
A typical day at Carm: After gathering a mouth-watering plate of raw broccoli and cauliflower, over organic multigrain brown rice, with a side of pinto beans and, of course, a crisp gala apple, I sprint happily back to my seat with the biggest smile. Cheek to cheek. At this very second, I hear a belch. One by one, my friends appall at my meal. They are in awe that I completely avoided the meat section.
Almost every day, I have to explain my vegetarianism to the uninformed. Among the myriad reasons why a plant-based diet is beneficial, 3 stand out: The effects on health, environment, and economy. But on top of all these personal and societal advantages, is an even more crucial reason- saving lives. For example, hundreds of thousands of little chicklets are shoved into tight cages with no breathing room, living in their own excrement and blood, waiting to get boiled alive before being sent to Mcdonalds. Elephants are whipped and slashed behind the curtains at circuses, only to witness a smiling and clapping crowd seconds later. Whether burned alive, crushed in blenders, electrocuted in water tubs, or butchered in a concealed factory, the suffering of animals is insurmountable. An immense surge of guilt rushed through me when I realized that I had spent the past 13 years of my life eating something that was once alive.
