During that period the citizens had very little idea of “who these people were, why they acted the way they did, and how they should be treated” (Beirne-Smith, Patton, & Kim 5). It would not be until the 20th century before society had enough interest and knowledge on people with intellectual disabilities to properly describe the condition. In fact, “the term autism was first used in the early 20th century by psychiatrist Dr. Eugen Bleuler” he would use the expression at the time “to describe individuals with schizophrenia who were disconnected from reality” (Bernier & Gerdts, 2). It would be several years after that before a Dr. Leo Kanner would adopt the term autism to describe those “involving challenges in social and language in addition to the presence of receptive behavior” as it is more commonly used today (Beirne-Smith, Patton, & Kim 5).
