One one hand, in Genesis 9:12 God said “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.” This states that God created all plants for our use and consumption. Whether or not that includes recreational smoking is unclear. Additionally, though later it warns against intoxication, the Bible does also give permission to enjoy intoxicating substances in moderation in verses such as Ecclesiastes 9:7 where it says “Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you …show more content…
Intoxication in general is a sin. Several verses prove this point including Proverbs 31:4-5, Proverbs 23:31, and Ephesians 5:8 which says “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.” While these verses refer directly to wine, there are several other substances that are considered intoxicating such as opioids, sedatives, cocaine, and cannabis. Whether a Christian decides that the Bible is for or against recreational marijuana, we should always be doing what we are doing for the glory of God.
