Bias In Legalizing Marijuana

Media is known to be the main principle many individuals look up to in today’s society. It is the root to stay focus and grab one’s attention in order to see what is going around in the world. Legalization of marijuana would be one expectation that would be occurring today. Although it is legal in California, it is still in process for the upcoming year of 2018. I came across different views about legalizing marijuana and they both are from different perspectives such as; a liberal view and a conservative’s view. Media sources often tell a different story then what occurs in the real world. There are three main bias points that I will mention. They are bias by omission, bias by selection of sources, and bias by story selection. First off, …show more content…
Or only being able to mention points that are fit for one rather than the other opinion as a reporter or the one who is speaking. For the first article this reporter had few sayings from health agencies, Larry Wolk, and director, Mike Hartman. Both of these people agreed to what the reporter was saying such as, yes, edible marijuana should be banned. Larry Wolk mention, “The marijuana industry isn't alone in trying to anticipate what will catch a grabby toddler's eye. People call Colorado's poison control hotline thousands of times…” and Mike Hartman said, “Colorado lawmakers approved the ban on some edible shapes in 2016. At one hearing on the issue, lawmakers shown packages of gummy candies that contained pot and typical gummy bears couldn't tell the difference.” They both had approval for what they said whether it be from a poison control hotline or Colorado’s lawmakers. Foody, the reporter, also agreed that being under the influence of a high THC can impair a user. She also mentions Cinnamon Bidwell a professor who does studies of people who abuse a drug. In this case marijuana was being used on participants to indicate how much THC one could handle and how the outcomes will turn out to be. The fact-checked of this is that Bidwell will assign certain percentages of THC to individuals and see what the outcomes of it will be. Truth is they are still in …show more content…
For legalization of marijuana one could think right away as marijuana being a harmful drug or just being some kind of medication. When in reality once one starts to do research, they find out what it is really about. Having to read an article is easy until finding out what side it stands in whether it be more to the right or left. When reading the articles, it is good to know the bias of each to understand and have a clue to where the topic stands. Some articles could be just pure propaganda and as a reader one falls into the trap without doing more research or even noticing. For the conservative point of view with this topic was that edible marijuana should be banned and marijuana is just like any other type of drug. The reporter mentioned, “The same rules that apply to alcohol or prescription medication have to apply to marijuana"(McGreevy). While leaving out how one could use it responsible and what is legal. For the liberal point of view, they mentioned how one could be educated to avoid certain catastrophes, but they left out how it could be more harmful for toddlers. For both articles one was more worried for one whereas the other was more focused on

Granted, this can be a tricky job as there will always be some degree of bias involved. In dispensing of that information, it’s the role of the media to think critically about the issues. One of the most precious freedoms we have in this country is freedom of the press. It not only creates an atmosphere where people can exchange ideas and opinions but also allows others to vet those very same ideas and opinions. Proverbs 18:17 says, “The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.”…

It also states that Justin Trudeau “will have access to a world-class marijuana framework” this makes the audience feel more comfortable that there is a structure in place for Trudeau to follow (Kirkup). The articles says that “it is a landmark change for Canada and I think they’re on the cutting edge of what will be essentially an international movement” (Kirkup). A European Analysis by the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) System that Steinbaum cited in her article provides evidence that cannabis use increased the risk of heart attack in people. At this point in the article, Steinbaum mentions pro-marijuana lobbyist and how they spin marijuana off to be a “natural drug.” The mention of opponents establishes credibility with the reader. Mentioning rebuttals and working toward disproving them is a very effective strategy in argumentative writing. The article also uses potential for abuse of marijuana as a concern for legalization.…

Bias, an inevitable form of one-sided, broadcasted information, has taken over the media for the worst and provides a chance of manipulation from a strong view in the media. Those presenting establish a way of language that is putting an opinion across that will construct a viewpoint either opposing or supporting the event in place of revealing both sides of a story. Being bias means that the individual voicing one’s opinion is the only right opinion and especially not caring for any other beliefs since other beliefs are considered wrong, and is not the right way at all, by any means. Allowing bias to take over media disregards opposing views and dominates the media in order to make a certain view more popular. As a result of disputable opinions…

As time progresses, media has been gaining more influence on our daily lives and opinions, but it has been starting to disseminate the facts and information about key topics. Since a lot of people rely on the media for information, it causes them to see an event from only one viewpoint, which causes their opinion to sway. One case of this, involving a current event, is when the media reported Trump’s decision to rescind the DACA, which is a policy that protects certain undocumented immigrants to the United States who entered as minors from deportation. When the news had the responsibility of reporting this, three big networks were biased to the con side and therefore influenced most of the people into thinking the decision was incorrect.…

The truth is though that both side have reasonable arguments and neither one can call the other wrong due to the fact that none of us really know what will happen if the plant is legalized. The argument of supporting the legalization of marijuana is simple, if the plant is not dangerous like we have been told and actually posses numerous medical benefits, than it should be our right and freedom to have access to it. There is also the billions of dollars in tax revenue the government stands to gain if they did choose to legalize the plant, not to mention all of the tax money that will be saved from not having to prosecute marijuana users. While this seems like the clear choice the argument to keep marijuana illegal does bring up some points that could easily be over looked if we were to rush into the legalization of marijuana. A big concern that has arisen from the legalization marijuana is the use in younger children becoming more and more common to see (6).…
