Marijuana Legalization Throughout history marijuana is the most commonly used drug worldwide and according to Millhorn, one third of the United States reported they have used marijuana once in their life. Marijuana is defined as a drug that comes from the hemp plant and can be smoked or eaten. The legalization of this plant has been a controversial topic over the past few decades. It has gained a negative view because it is seen as a gateway drug and impacts our youth negatively (Millhorn 126). After the legalization of marijuana in eleven states for people over the age of twenty-one many people have supported the movement to legalize marijuana in all of the United States (Millhorn 128). If those over the age of twenty-one are allowed to use marijuana, then they will most likely influence their friends and family members under that age to smoke so they can fit in and be socially accepted by others. A few additional reasons why adolescents feel pressured to smoke marijuana is because of their parent’s habits, social setting, and lack of family support (Hopfer, Stallings, Hewitt and Crowley 2003). Another appealing attribute of consuming marijuana is enjoying the ‘high’ feeling THC gives them and also the courage of trying new illegal activities. One topic that has been argued by many researchers in this field is whether marijuana is addictive or not. In my opinion, I do not think marijuana is addictive until you start smoking everyday and depend on it in order to feel a sense of normalcy. When individuals have a high tolerance to smoking they usually need more or a stronger strand of marijuana to feel the high. These people labeled as ‘stoners’ today can’t function properly without smoking marijuana. There have been many debates on whether their states legalization was a good or bad thing. Due to this new law in place many people around the United States are attracted to move to Colorado so they can take part in the marijuana friendly society. “On January 1, 2014, Colorado became the first state in the nation to allow sales of recreational marijuana” (Ghosh 21). These sales have taken off and suppliers of marijuana throughout the state are successful in terms of making massive amounts of money. There have been many difficulties throughout this process including: an absence of regulatory limits, messing up the difference between state and federal laws, and overseeing the amount individuals consume. At the moment, the state of Colorado does not have a method set up to report the number of driving accidents while under the influence of marijuana. I think the government needs to create a system to calculate these deaths as soon as possible in order to prevent future deaths and make precautions to reduce the amount of casualties. Every item related to marijuana sold in different dispensaries have to be properly indicated with amount and content details the marijuana product contains in order to be sold. These dispensaries have strict limits and regulations like hours of operations, the location is required to be far from
