Killer whales, also known as orcas, are very large animals ranging from 16 to 26 feet and weighing as much as 8,000 pounds. These animals are absolutely breathtaking when seen in person. Blackfish, a documentary on killer whales associated with Sea World, another park in Canada, and one near Africa, tells the story of a few orcas, but mainly the orca Tilikum. This film was released in 2013 after Dawn Brancheau, the trainer for Tilikum, was dragged into the pool and killed. Gabriella Cowperthwaite, the director, thought that something was wrong with Sea World’s explanation of her death, so the director decided to make a film about killer whales being kept in captivity. The experts bring up the fact that at Sea World employees are told to say, “Killer whales in the wild live a shorter life than in captivity” (Blackfish). While in captivity, killer whales only live to be around the age of 30 (Blackfish). According to one of the experts in the film who is an OSHA expert witness and whale researcher, Dave Duffus, he says, “Killer whales that live their life in the wild have the same life span of humans” (Blackfish). By using someone who has experience in this specific field, the director shows that Sea World will lie about how long the whales are supposed to live to make Sea World look good. She shows that Sea World wants the world to believe that they are the best option for the whales and that the whales are safer in captivity. Gabriella Cowperthwaite does an astounding job with her argument and got the best evidence that someone could manage to receive while trying to tear apart an organization such as Sea World. The director completely showed her feelings through this film towards animals in captivity and may even be biased about the situation due to what segments of the interviews she decided to use. Her argument is completely valid in every way with the evidence given by the previous trainers and the expert researchers, but only if she did not leave out any information that the trainers talked about that may have showed how great Sea World can be. Some of the research obtained through trainers may be skewed from their own personal experiences while working at the park, but most of the trainers care about the animals more than anything. The emotions displayed are expected and there is no reason as to why the emotions sway the argument either way. This argument is one that should be discussed by the government, and that is what the director wanted. She wants the killer whales to be free and for people to know what happens to killer whales while they are kept in
