Some staff members insist that it kills germs and prevents illnesses in the center; others feel the use of it exposes children to more chemicals. Since most illness in child care programs are caused by viruses, anti-bacterial soap really won’t reduce illness. Until it is shown that anti-bacterial soaps are safe for use with young children and is superior to regular soap, it would be prudent to limit its use. The ingredient label on products will indicate whether triclosan is included. According to health and safety experts, vigorous hand washing in warm water with plain soap for at least 10 seconds is sufficient to fight germs in most cases, even for health care workers.
