‘F’ is for Firearm. Today, teachers and professor should be allowed to carry firearms on school grounds. With the growing amount of on-campus shootings, educators should be allowed to carry a concealed firearm on campus. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 is no longer a good idea. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 currently makes it illegal for anyone to carry a gun in a school zone, which is on campus or within 1000 feet of a school. (Chen, 2015) These horrific tragedies are occurring more often today than ever before. The only solution to these reoccurring episodes is to arm teachers and give them a fighting chance. We hear about multiple school shootings every year, but the people caught inside are helpless. Every second counts on a school shooting. A police officer on average takes anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes to arrive at a scene, and we had our teachers armed they would be able to take action immediately. Kasey Hansen, a special needs teacher in Utah, is prepared to take down any armed gunman that barges through the door of one of her classrooms. (Byk, 2014) Hansen is one of an unknown number of armed teachers across the country. Hansen stated that she wants to protect her students. She said, “I’m going to stand in front of a bullet for any student that is in my protection so I want the option to be able to defend us.” In ten years since teachers have been allowed to carry guns in Utah, no fatal K-12 school shootings have occurred. (Byk, 2014) With Utah, not having any issues with school shootings, I believe we need to adopt the law they have and spread it across the country to allow teachers to carry firearms. One factor everyone needs to understand is that firearms will not be passed out like candy on a Halloween night. Teachers will undergo gun safety training in order to carry their firearm on
