The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states, “a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Most people would think that this section was written specifically for Militia, particularly considering the fact that the Nation had successfully revolted against England. In fact the Supreme Court agreed that this section addressed State Militia for most of the Country’s history. That meant that governments could place restrictions on possession of firearms. While Cities continued to restrict gun ownership, gun advocates promoted their interpretation in legislation and media and in 2008 the Supreme Court held that this Amendment that says ‘well regulated Militia’ didn’t really mean that and instead it meant, anybody can keep and bear Arms with some minor exceptions.
How could such a simple and direct sentence be capable of such different interpretations? And why does this discussion create such heated advocacy?
