Gun control has become a major issue in the recent years of the United States due to all of the tragic massacres that have occurred. Despite all of these shootings throughout public schools, theaters, and churches, nothing has really been done to prevent more of these in the future. Gun lobbyists and the NRA have a strong grip over congress, which is a big reason for ultimately no change. In response to all of these tragic shootings, the United States needs to crack down on gun control to make this society safer for everyone involved, despite the push for more guns by a variety of gun advocates. For example, if you’re driving your car one day and it breaks down out of nowhere, our first ideal reaction is going to be finding a way to fix it or repair it. However, why do we not have these same characteristics and ideas when trying to solve the issue of gun control? Instead of even trying to solve the problem, some gun advocates are calling for more firearms to be carried around, practically adding fuel to the fire we hope to eventually extinguish. President Obama speaking on the inaction of our country after recent tragic shootings said, “ "This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America." He uses this word choice because ultimately all of the tragic shootings after the first few is the government's fault because they have failed to make any change for the safety of our country. Instead, they just keep ignoring the problem as if it's the elephant in the room and blame it on other factors such as mental illness. It's widely known and understood that most of these shootings were carried out by people with mental illnesses, however that is no excuse as to why or how they ultimately got the guns used to carry out the acts. In Joe Perticones article, he states that the infamous Charleston shooter, Dylann Roof, “ purchased a .45 caliber handgun despite being arrested on a felony narcotics charge — a charge that should have prevented him from obtaining the weapon.” This clearly explains that mental illness should never be an excuse for the mass murders occurring in this country, instead the fault is on the national government for not cracking down on the issuing of
