One of the biggest issues that as a country we have struggled with for a long time is gun control. Gun control is a safety issue; however, countless people such as politicians and the government refuse to acknowledge the lack of enforcement that should exist. Firearms are not for everyone, as not everyone uses them for security. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately. In this year alone, the statistics have been one school shooting every week; moreover, there were seventeen school shootings where someone was injured or killed. Many of the places that are supposed to be considered safe are not anymore. The 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary school lost their lives by school shooter Adam Lanza, who was reported to have Asperger's syndrome and is known as “deeply troubled”. Too many innocent lives are being taken away by people abusing their second amendment and being mentally ill. Gun control is a serious issue in the United States that needs to be contained, the importance surrounding gun control is the ongoing violence that harms our communities because there are barely any restrictions on firearms and assault weapons, allowing almost anyone to obtain lethal weapons which should not be allowed. The government needs to reduce easy access to dangerous weapons by requiring universal background checks, and reinstating the assault weapon ban immediately. Military grade weapons are unnecessary being owned by people considering their not needed for self-defense, however, countless citizens seem to purchase them as easily as it is to vote; being a certain age and a citizen. The Giffords Law Center states that; assault weapons pose a distinct threat to the safety and security of the American people, making it easier for deranged attackers to kill more people more quickly and have been used in many tragic, high-profile shootings, including the nation’s most deadly mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida in 2016, which left 49 dead and 53
