Grammys Backlash Considered music’s biggest night of the year, the 2018 Grammys faced a tremendous amount of criticism from all sides. From actors and actresses, to musicians, to Grammy viewers from all around, backlash was produced in waves. Amongst some of the most infuriated were the women of the world. What initially sparked their anger were comments said by Neil Portnow, the president of the Recording Academy himself. “Women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level” Portnow told reporters, “need to step it up.” Pop singer Pink then fired back with a handwritten letter stating “Women in music don’t need to ‘step up’ – women have been stepping up since the beginning of time. Portnow to step down. Since the controversy, Portnow has sent out a statement in efforts of clarifying his words saying “I regret that I wasn’t as articulate as I should have been in conveying this thought. Of course there’s going to be dispute regarding every win and loss but one singer who faced a tremendous amount of backlash was Best New Artist winner, Alessia Cara. Many viewers believed that because her music has been around for several years she didn’t even deserve to be nominated. Cara then took to Instagram writing “I’m aware that my music wasn’t released yesterday, I’m aware that, yes, my music has become fairly popular in the last year.” In this past year especially, it’s seemed to be harder than usual to for people to leave politics out of the entertainment industry. One Grammy moment that had people talking was the skit by host James Corden which showed several celebrities supposedly auditioning for the spoken word recording of Michael Wolff's best-seller on President Donald Trump's administration, "Fire and
