Argumentative Essay: Daniel Clowes’ “Ghost World” (1997)
Daniel Clowes’ “Ghost World” (1997) is a graphic book that entails the feelings of insecurity and sadness which are necessary emotions that many teenagers go through before as well as later than graduating high school. These teenagers must know the paths that their lives should follow during adulthood at that critical time. Clowes’ graphic novel features two girls, who are teenagers. The author embraces powerful language and sarcasm that embody these two teenagers and the different characters they interact with all over the story. On the other hand, the aquamarine may represent the sadness, depression, gloominess and other negative emotions that Enid and Rebecca are going through. The reader can interpret the color as sadness and hence appeal to the emotional experiences encountered in the adolescence stage. The author’s perspective in association with the female adolescence emerges. Different sections in the panel establish absurdities such as indiscriminate expenditure which includes buying a normal pair of shoes for at one million Dollars. Whether it is desperation or outburst of Enid, the author lays all the aspects of the story bare for the audience to experience in an impactful means through the powerful art. The color symbolism imparts the greater meaning of the words used in the panel, to that effect, it turns the written information in the panel into a powerful instrument. However, the reader must have the prior knowledge of the color symbolism in order to comprehend the interpretation of the color symbolism correctly. The black color used in parts of the panel implies mystery, elegance, and fear. Therefore, the black color shows that the characters Enid and Rebecca’s adolescence stage is a mystery and they cannot understand why they encounter different emotional outburst throughout the story.
