Genetic Engineering As technology advances, more opportunities arise. A major developing technological advancement is in the field of Science, more specifically engineering, and it is known as Genetic Engineering. Dictionary.com defines Genetic Engineering as “the development and application of scientific methods, procedures, and technologies that permit direct manipulation of genetic material in order to alter the hereditary traits of a cell, organism, or population.” What this means is that Genetic Engineering is the intentional changing of an individual's gene sequence. The biggest exposure to Genetic Engineering came to the public eye when famous singer John Legend and model Chrissy Teigen used Genetic Engineering to decided the sex of their baby. This brought up a lot of controversy over whether or not it was “right” for the couple to make that decision. (Girard). However, when it comes down to the end, it is not society which gets to decide whether or not Genetic Engineering is moral and respectful towards life. In order to respect life while still using Genetic Engineering to the populations advantage, individuals and communities could encourage the use of Genetic Engineering for the sole purpose of fixing a birth defect or disability, and to avoid the use of it to create a “designer baby”. Along with this, Genetic Engineering is relevant to the Fifth Commandment, Christ’s Law of Love, and other Catholic teachings. The Fifth Commandment is about respecting and protecting human life in all its stages. This relates to Genetic Engineering because the procedure can cause harm to the embryo. Genetic Engineering also relates to the Churches teachings of defense of human life when it is vulnerable. Human life is extremely vulnerable in the womb, and therefore Genetic Engineering can be dangerous towards the embryo. Lastly, Christ’s Law of Love calls for people to forgive and promote peace.
