Every year many people die due to a rare disease or disorder since a cure has not been found yet. Rare diseases and disorders are fairly deadly and studies with gene therapy have allowed for a cure. A severe inherited blindness called Leber congenital amaurosis was treated with gene therapy. Not only were the tests successful for the patients but when one eye was treated with gene therapy, the second untreated eye naturally started to benefit from the first eye’s treatment. Similarly, genetic therapy has been able to help cure or reverse cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure which affects 5 million people each year. The quality of life has improved for these individuals and saved the healthcare system a lot of money.
