Those who are in charge of legislation and laws pertaining to the LGBTQ community are individual who do not identify as part of the LGBTQ community. Those individuals who are apart of the LGBTQ community must abide by these laws and regulations put into place. This would not be a problem if everyone was treated with the same amount of respect and equality, but there are certain individuals in power that abuse their power to control society to benefit themselves and perpetuate their own agenda. For the majority of elected officials, your political affiliation determines your stance on gay rights. Those who lean left, or more liberal, tend to support gay rights; while on the reserve, those who lean right, or more conservative, tend to not support gay rights (Lobaugh).
Besides the government, we have individuals in higher institutions using their power to spread love and acceptance throughout the LGBTQ community and beyond. For example, unlike most Popes, the most recent Pope, Pope Francis, encourages and support the LGBTQ community, a very controversal stance to take in the Catholic church. Pope Francis has outwardly stated, “If someone is gay and searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”
