The Controversy Of Homosexual Adoption

Superior Essays
There are hundreds of thousands of children in adoption centers in the world that need a good and loving home and family. Each year many of them are adopted into their "ideal" home and their lives are forever changed. Throughout the years, adoption was only granted to a couple, which was ideally portrayed as marriage between a man and woman; however, there has been a recent increase of homosexual couple who have expressed the desire to adopt and raise a child in the same manner that their heterosexual counterparts do. There is major controversy surrounding this subject as many different views over it have continued to surface. Many people have posed questions such as; should they be able to adopt? What will happen to the children? Will they …show more content…
Children who are in the adoption process have, typically, already been through many difficulties in their previous homes. Many of them have been through both physical and mental abuse, divorce, family death, and many other varying causal situations. Not only are they carrying the memory of these different situations with them, but now they are having to relocate to a new home where they are entirely unfamiliar. Many of these children want to leave their past behind and move forward to begin to live with a family who cares for them and will show them with utmost comfort. However, this may not be the case when moving into a homosexual home. The children will be even more emotionally disoriented when seeing two mom or two dads. Not only will they be brought to a totally new home with two same-sex parents, but they will also live with parents who are also emotionally unbalanced. Research shows that “lesbians…in [a] sample were significantly more likely to have mental health problems and report self-injury and suicide” (Kerr). This finding serves to show just how lesbians are predisposed to having high percentages of hurting themselves due to various reasons. It also supports the idea that homosexuals have major stressors in life due to their sexual appeals and this can be a major disadvantage when adopting a child. If lesbian women cause themselves injuries or even …show more content…
There are many ways in which religion can come into the opposition of homosexual adoption. A prime example in the fact that a majority of the nation are born with the Christian belief as their primary religious faith and this belief does not agree with the joining of two same-sex individuals. An example of this can be seen in an article written over the suicide of a gay man named Zach Harrington. Mr. Harrington killed himself after being in a city council meeting which greatly disagreed with homosexuality. The article highlighted the statement by the city council that “as they saw it, [even] the very creator of the universe stood against homosexuality so strongly” (Reitan). This is a common belief of the Christian faith, and though more and more church associations continue to have discussions regarding the possibility of permitting same-sex marriage, there has not been an amendment to the global Christian belief that the practice of homosexuality is indeed sinful. Not only is the majority of the people in the nation Christian and share the belief that that homosexuality is a sin, but some of the children in adoption centers are also Christians. How would they react when being brought into a home in which they view the sexual orientation of their adopted parents to be sinful? Many children were raised conservatively which has subsequently led them to have certain beliefs and a

Adoption implies an opportunity to be desired, adored, and appreciated despite the flaws you have, removing the misery of living alone and placing the blissful feelings of being surrounded by a family. Annually, thousands of children enter the foster care system and wait with anticipation for their chance of having a family again. According to UNICEF, the number of orphans globally in 2008 was approximated to be 132 million orphans. Hence for decreasing this enormous number, adoption should be encouraged and supported so orphans could find a better future and accumulate a better life. In other words, we should support different types of adoption like transracial, special needs children, and international adoption.…

I have considered, if I were to work in an adoption center, how I would react if I was working with a homosexual couple. I think it would be difficult for me to want to allow the couple to have a child, because it is important that a child has both a female and male figure in their life and I want what is best for the child. However, if I was not working for a Christian…

Some people say no matter what the child will be better off with straight parents rather than gay parents. However “Williams Institute confirms there is no difference in the behavioral outcomes of adopted children raised in same-sex households when compared to those raised by heterosexual couples” (Perry). Whether gay or straight it does not affect the children’s behavior or emotions. Even though the couple is gay the children will still be better off with them apposed to being in foster-care. The foster care system is unstable because children get passed around like a toy when it comes to foster homes.…

Shmuley brings up another great point when he says, “That some people would prefer that unwanted children remain in orphanages rather than in warm and welcoming homes is a sad commentary on the self-appointed morality police of our time.” (Boteach, 2012). Gay parents are willing to start families, and these abandoned children are ready to be in a loving…

Considering the facts that support there are no differences between children with same-sex parents and children with opposite-sex parents, the controversy behind gay adoption should not exist. Considering that the evidence is so overwhelming that The American Psychological Association passed a resolution stating that it, “opposes any discrimination based on sexual orientation in matters of adoption, (including child custody and visitation, foster care, and reproductive health services) and supports the protection of parent-child relationships through the legalization of joint adoptions and second parent adoptions of children of same-sex couples” (Burkholder). “Adoption is about finding families for children, not finding children for families “says Dr. Joyce Maguire Pavao. They 're many orphans in the world, but there are just not enough families or parents to take them in. There aren’t that many families who can and will adopt children, whether it’s; they can’t support them or they just don’t want to deal with children. People are fear of change, and change is not always bad as people think it could be. For example, some would say that it could cause psychological problems that it isn’t natural; it is supposed to be a woman and a man they say that homosexuals wouldn’t be good parents.…

Some people believe that it is just straight up wrong while others believe everyone deserves equal rights and opportunities. Adoption has been around for many years, but only recently has the question of gay adoption been raised. Throughout this world there are many orphans but not enough parents or families to take them in. There are not that many families who can and will adopt children, whether its because they cant support them, they have children of their own, or they just don’t want children. An estimated 100,000 kids linger in foster care centers around the United States. Same-sex couples are dominating a large portion of the population that hope to adopt, but still continue to face many obstacles on their quest to do so. Because the Supreme Court voted to make gay marriage legal nationwide in 2015, this aids in same-sex couples being allowed to adopt from foster care agencies instead of through private, gay-friendly adoption agencies. However, homosexual couples continue to face difficulties in adopting in states that have laws to limit joint adoption to a husband and wife (Beitsch). Research shows evidence that gay and lesbian couples are more likely to adopt foster care children that typically belong to groups that are least likely to get adopted.…

The fact is, there is a lack of new adoptive parents. Gay parents can already be foster parents for children, but adoption would confirm the legal rights of the gay couple. Since 1994, United States federal law has prohibited “denying prospective adoptive or foster parents the opportunity to adopt or foster children based on race, color or national origin” (HHC). However, no federal legislature stops the discrimination based on sexual preference of prospective adoptive parents. Determining the parenting rights is made on a "case-by-case basis" and it is judge's decision whether to grant the adoption petition (Human Rights Campaign).…
