In recent discussion of the graphic novel Fun Home, a controversial issue has been whether Fun Home should be taught in a college setting, and if it should be required to read. On the one hand, some argue that Fun Home is a perfect representation of the problems some people face with their sexuality and the death of a loved one. From this perspective, people say it is easy to understand a perspective that you don’t really understand, and opens your mind to different ideas. On the other hand, however, others argue that the graphic details in the graphic novel are against people’s belief of not looking at graphic images. In the words of Colleen Flaherty’s article, one of her main proponents is, “The book is an autobiographical meditation on love, family and identity, and with its constant references to Greek mythology and literary greats from Shakespeare to James Joyce, it’s not hard to see why it was Duke University’s recommended summer reading for incoming freshmen. (Flaherty 1)” According to this view, that Flaherty present is that Fun Home is a great graphic novel to be studied, and learned in the college setting. In sum, then, the issue is whether graphic novels have a negative impacts or if they give readers more of a perspective on life to educate themselves more. …show more content…
Although some might object that it is against their religion, and they would be defying all the core ideas that they grew up with, I would reply if you want to be a college scholar you have to be opened to new ideas or you can’t proceed with knowledge.
