It is clear that what is considered full day kindergarten is becoming the standard at an increasingly fast rate every year. Despite the rise in full day programs there are differing opinions about whether this is a good thing or not. There are those who support full day programs, those who do not, and those who say it doesn’t really matter which type of program children at the age of five are enrolled in. Full day kindergarten programs typically have the students at school for six hours during the day. This length of time varies from school to school, but not a whole lot. Supporters of this type of program believe that it provides a better atmosphere for learning at a young age. While interviewing parents, Brannon found that many who support full day programs feel inadequate to continue teaching at home. They know teachers are trained and have much more experience. Therefore, a teacher can work better with the children on academics (Brannon, 59). With academic benchmarks being raised, the added hours allow more time for teacher to access their students and spend more individual time with them (Elicker and Mathur 461).

These people lean on research done in later grades and compared students who attended full day programs against those who attended half day programs. Surprisingly, no significant difference was found in these students (Chang, et al. 37). Studies suggest the further a child advances into higher grades the more any kind of educational gap fades. Thus implying that “natural student development” occurs at individual times (Diorio. 5).
