Personal Narrative: The Bryan Family

Improved Essays
Let me first start off by saying The Bryan Family is hands down the best group of people in the world. I am the youngest of three, I have an older sister (29), an older brother (24), and then there is myself (23). I also have two amazing parents who got a divorce when I was 3 years old and both remarried when I was 5. We are a very close-knit family who like to be involved in each other’s lives. Through the second marriage I gained a step-mom and dad, who also had children from their previous marriages, giving us three step-siblings. Growing up my mom had primary custody of all three children, leaving my dad with once a week and every other weekend, dads always get the short end of the stick. Some boundaries placed in my family are knock before you enter a role, that way we are respect each other’s space and privacy. Another way I exhibit boundaries within my relationships, I inform them exactly what lines we will not be crossing upfront so they can not be upset later. Homeostasis is the resist of change, families strive to keep balance and do anything they can to keep a stable system. My family, from the get go, hit big change with a divorce that was inevitable, but tried their best to keep stability through communication and flexibility with one another. Or it can be seen through my brothers recovery and we tried to hit it from the outside world by telling them, ‘everything is fine’. With that rules are also a big thing within a family system, they maintain the stability that is strived for within a family system. Two big rules around my family are to get a college education and to make good money. I think these are a big deal because my mom started her own business and with that you put a lot of money and at first don’t get a lot out so we were tight for money a lot of the time. All of these ideas are programmed into our family without being told about them ahead of time. Triangulation is seen all throughout my family, it is the concept of two members joining together positively or negatively to make a point to another member. In my family the most recent occurrence of this was with my sister and me teaming together to talk to my mom about her spending habits and how it isn’t healthy for the family when you have no money to spend. We also use to gang up on my mom at times when she was enabling our brother financially, when he didn’t need it or if he was using her for money and she wouldn’t say no. Triangulation is accentually the idea of power in

I say biological because my dad has half siblings with children, although my family has never been close to them. On my mom’s side, I am the main niece my aunt talks to. My aunt also has half siblings with children, but they 've never been as close as her and I were. I was also the only grandchild until I was twelve. This was very special to me because it meant that I was always the center of attention, the priority if you will; my aunt Andrea surprised us by having a son later in life when she was 44.…

Family has a unique meaning no matter what culture it possibly can be. I never had a chance to meet my extended family from my mother’s side because her parents passed away before I was born and she was the only child in her household. I grew up with only spending parts of the day with my father and the other half with my mother. Other peers in places that I would go to school with thought my family was together because they were more involved in what I liked to do when I was younger. When I was younger I always thought families were supposed to be traditional with two parents of the opposite sex and thought that all families had the typical mother and father in their lives.…

From recollections of my family members, they intentionally kept us together because we would cry constantly if we were separated, if not we would look around as if we knew the other was missing. In regards to Erikson’s theory, I was relatively a trusting child because I knew my mother would return, regardless of where she was going. This may be due to having someone else present all of the time, my twin. Though my mother did inform me that I would cry if she would leave, specifically early on in life, which is…
