A prime source for fake news to be created are elections. The term fake news was coined by Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, where he accused CNN of spreading fake news about him to persuade constituents to not vote for him. According to William Jasper, the media tries to ruin the public image of politicians. Jasper emphasizes, “Long before Hillary Clinton labeled Trump voters an irredeemable "basket of deplorables ... racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic," conservatives had become inured to being similarly smeared by the media elites.” (Jasper). Jasper is showing that the media spread fake news that Trump is affiliated and support racist groups because those same groups show that they support Trump. This accusation harmed the reputation of Trump at the climax of the election where every vote was pivotal. CNN, a giant in the world of media, has become notorious for spreading fake news to harm Trump and other politicians’ reputations. C. Mitchell Shaw reported about CNN’s actions against Trump, “CNN declared war on him. In an apparent effort to discredit Trump and bring him down, the titanic news network seems to have overestimated the maximum dosage of fake news the American viewer can consume.” (Shaw).
